GATE 2023: Exam Date (OUT), Registration (August 30), Question Paper, Syllabus, Pattern

GATE 2023 information bulletin along with the exam schedule has been released by the exam conducting authority on July 27, 2022. As per the official release, The GATE 2023 application form portal will be open for registration from August 30, 2022. Candidates who are fulfilling the prescribed eligibility criteria can complete the GATE 2023 registration online on the official website at gate.iitk.ac.in. The GATE 2023 examination will be held on February 4, 5, 11, and 12, 2023. The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2023 will be organised by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur in a total of 219 cities across the country. This year, 23 new cities/towns have been added to the list of GATE exam centres. Apart from that, IIT Kanpur has also added some new two-paper combinations. Now, there are a total of 82 two-paper combinations available for GATE 2023.

IIT Kanpur has launched the GATE 2023 official website with details of the GATE syllabus 2023 and the schedule of the examination. As per the released GATE SYllabus 2023, civil engineering has 7 sections.

What is GATE Exam?

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering or GATE is an online a national level examination conducted for Master of Engineering (ME), Masters in Technology (MTech) and direct PhD admissions to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other institutes/universities across India. The exam is jointly conducted by IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee and Indian Institute for Science, Bangalore (IISC Bangalore), on a rotational basis on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB – GATE), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource & Development (MHRD), Government of India.

What’s new in the GATE Exam 2023?

GATE 2023 notification has been released on July 27, 2022, by IIT Kanpur, the conducting body of GATE 2023, on the official website-gate.iitk.ac.in. Along with the GATE 2023 notification, IIT Kanpur has also released the information brochure, updated exam syllabus, and exam pattern. The brochure comprises details regarding the newly introduced changes in the exam. Candidates can check the new things below:

  • New Papers: Two new subjects have been introduced: Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering (combined) and Geomatics Engineering. The total number of subjects increased to 29 for GATE 2023.
  • Exam Centres: There is an increase in the number of GATE 2022 exam centres. With the addition of new 23 centres, this year, GATE 2023 exam will be conducted at 219 centres across India. Last year, GATE was conducted across 206 cities, but 10 of the earlier cities have been dropped this year due to operational issues, while many new ones have been added.
  • Relaxed Eligibility Criteria to be continued: GATE 2023 eligibility criteria will be the same as that of the last year which was relaxed from the minimum 10+2+4 (previous) to a minimum of 10+2+3 (ongoing). It enabled the students studying in the third year of their undergraduate course to appear for the entrance test. The GATE score is valid for the next three years from the date of the result declaration.
  • Appear for more than one paper: Apart from that, IIT Kanpur has also added new two-paper combinations for GATE 2023. Now, there are 82 two-paper combinations available for GATE. The examination will test the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering, sciences, humanities and social sciences. 
  • All Test Papers of GATE 2023 will be objective type. The pattern of questions may include:
    • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ),
    • Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) and/or
    • Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions

GATE 2023 Eligibility Criteria

Candidates aspiring for GATE exam must meet all the eligibility conditions before filling the application form. Students can check the eligibility criteria below:

Educational Qualification: To apply for GATE 2023, candidates must possess either of the below-mentioned undergraduate degrees. Students who are studying in the third or final years of any undergraduate degree are also eligible to appear for the exam.

  • BPharma
  • BArch
  • BSc (Research)/BS
  • Professional Society Examination (equivalent to BE/BTech/BArch)
  • MSc/MA/MCA or equivalent
  • Integrated ME/MTech
  • Integrated MSc/Integrated BS-MS
  • Integrated ME/MTech or Dual Degree (after Diploma or 10+2)

Pass Percentage: No minimum pass percentage criteria is defined as GATE 2023 eligibility.

Age Limit: There is no age limit defined to apply for the GATE exam.

Nationality: The candidate must be an Indian citizen.

GATE Eligibility Criteria for International Students: Candidates belonging to Nepal, Bangladesh, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates are also eligible to apply for GATE 2023.

Marking Scheme

Questions carry 1 mark and 2 marks

Negative Marking

For a wrong answer chosen in an MCQ, there will be negative marking as well. For 1-mark MCQ, 1/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer. Likewise, for 2-mark MCQ, 2/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer
